Radio communication-based method for analysis of train driving in an ERTMS signaling environment

Abstract Background ERTMS is an important project improving cross-border interoperability throughout Europe by a single rail signaling standard. One advantage following this development standardized radio signaling, which can be tracked logging the data transfer using ETCS protocol between Radio Block Center and train. This means that broad spectrum of train driving analyzed in terms for example behavior, signal planning capacity new efficient way. Methods In paper radio-based method to achieve this, presented applied studying braking characteristics meeting point design. The aim was design, apply validate collection enable cost-efficient avoid time-consuming collections. To comparison results from suggested traditional methods, verification measurement performed. Three different alternatives speed calculation were validated. These based on: Train Position Report speed; average on reported position; processed position forming speed. best alternative then examine deceleration towards targets at single-track points. Results study suggest Level 2 feasible way collect dynamics data. time saving when it comes driver behavior studies where several trains drivers are needed get significant results. Comparison with GPS valid. Most promising position.
